Philippi plans Christmas celebration meeting

PHILIPPI — The Philippi Christmas Committee will meet at 6 p.m. Thursday in Council Chambers of the Philippi City Hall. Anyone interested in attending is welcome to become part of the work going into this year’s Christmas celebration throughout Philippi.

At the Oct. 12 meeting, progress was reported on many fronts as the small group of enthusiastic volunteers pushes toward a Dec. 1 kickoff date. The first area of progress noted is that of decorating the Courthouse Square. Mayor Phil Bowers reported that approximately 50 trees are being secured to outline the square. The Rev. Sam Haught and Linda Minear noted they already received confirmation from 15 organizations that have volunteered to decorate the trees.

Other organizations wanting to join in the fun of decorating trees around the Courthouse Square are asked to contact Haught at the Crim United Methodist Church at 304-457-1123.

Philip Barbour High School will be involved with Philippi’s Christmas celebration with the school’s award-winning marching band set to participating in the Dec. 1 Christmas Parade and play two or three selections at the tree lighting ceremony following the parade.

Additionally, the wood working class at the PB Vocational Center will build three village structures for the next few years until a complete village is represented. These large 5-by-8-foot lighted structures will have movable doors and windows. This year’s structures will be a schoolhouse, a church and a toy show. The Christmas Committee extended a resounding “thank you!” to Philip Barbour High School for its efforts to light up Philippi this year.

The Christmas play, “Yes Virginia, There Is a Santa Claus” will be presented in Funkhouser Auditorium on the Alderson Broaddus University campus at 7:30 p.m. Dec. 15 and 3 p.m. Dec. 16. TJ Dalton will direct the play.

Judd Bracy will direct the large chorus scheduled to present a Community Christmas Concert at 4 p.m. Dec. 9 in the Philippi Baptist Church. While the Blue and Gray Community Chorus will be the basis for the community chorus, a call for other area choirs has been made and groups will be added as confirmed.

Among other activities undertaken by the Christmas Committee are a community Christmas calendar that will list all the activities submitted, the possibility of a horse-drawn cart to drive people around town to see the lights and the invitation to all Philippi residents to decorate their homes as part of the Christmas Lighting Contest.

More information about the work of the Christmas Committee and to volunteer to help is available by contacting Mayor Phil Bowers.
