PHILIPPI — The Philippi Public Library was well represented at the Tucker Community Foundation’s Run For It race in Davis on Sept. 23, during the Leaf Peeper’s Festival. The library’s team of 31 registered runners and walkers proudly wore the team T-shirts picturing the Philippi Public Library “Bookworms” and carried signs and a banner that read “Bookworms Rule!”

Fundraising and contributions by many sponsors pushed the library’s total amount of money raised to $10,655.55, including $7,050.55 in sponsorship and fundraising monies, $3,550 in race day awards and $155 in entry fees.

The Race Day awards for the library included $250 from the Bernard McDonough Foundation, $1,500 from the Tucker Community Foundation, $1,000 from the Barbour County Commission, and $500 from the Barbour County Foundation. Also, the library is very proud of 5K team members Barbara Schonk and Caroline Allen who won $100 each on behalf of the library for Schonk’s second place and Allen’s third place finish in their age category.

“We asked the community to help us, and they did! We want to shout a loud ‘Thank You!’ to our community, board of trustees, employees, volunteers, and especially our team runners and walkers, and sponsors. We’d also like to thank our award sponsors mentioned above and the Tucker Community Foundation,” Larry said. “This money helps the library meet the required match of the state Grant-in-Aid funds that the library receives. It also helps to meet operational expenses, update library services and programs, and maintain an aging facility. Unfortunately, fundraising has become a way of life for West Virginia libraries. We are very fortunate to be eligible to raise funds through the Run For It. We are grateful to the Tucker Community Foundation and especially to our community for it’s wonderful support.”

The library is already having fundraisers for the library’s “Bookworms” team in the 2018 Tucker Community Foundation Run For It. The library has a Fall Book Sale inside the library and great buys are available for a small donation.

There is a quilt drawing for a beautiful West Virginia lap quilt or quilt hanging donated by the Covered Bridge Piecemakers. Tickets are available at the library. All proceeds benefit the Covered Bridge Piecemakers and the Philippi Public Library “Bookworms” team in the 2018 Run For It.

The library is also having a “Cash for Christmas” 50/50 drawing. The drawings for both of these fundraisers will be Dec. 20, and tickets are available at the library.

On Nov. 30, the library will library host a Christmas Open House and Christmas Shoppe beginning at 4 p.m. and throughout the evening. The Christmas Shoppe will offer for sale Christmas baskets, books, and many other seasonal items suitable for Christmas presents. From 6-8:30 p.m., the library will also host “Here We Come A-Caroling” performed and presented by West Virginia storyteller and ballad singer Susanna Holstein and West Virginia folk musician Dr. J. David O’Dell. The library hours will be extended for this event. The Christmas program is free but seating is limited so registration is required. Light refreshments of wassail, also known as warm mulled cider, and Christmas cookies will be provided.
