The Arts Center to host production of ‘King Lear’ on Saturday

ELKINS — For the third year in a row, the Vintage Theatre Company’s Rustic Mechanicals will perform a play by William Shakespeare at The Arts Center.

This year’s production of “King Lear” continues the collaboration between the two organizations, and promises to be their best show yet. The performance is scheduled to begin at 8 p.m. Saturday at The Arts Center in Elkins.

When the play opens, King Lear has ruled for many years. As age begins to overtake him, he decides to divide his kingdom amongst his children, living out his day without the burden of power. A proud man, he allows vanity to cloud his judgment, believing that he can relinquish the crown, but enjoy the same authority and respect he has always known.

Misjudging his children’s loyalty, he soon finds himself stripped of all the trappings of state, wealth and power he had taken for granted. Alone in the wilderness, he is left to confront the mistakes of a life that has brought him to this point.

The Rustic Mechanicals, founded by Celi Oliveto, is the state’s only professional Shakespeare troupe. Touring three shows annually, their final show of 2017 begins with a trip to The Tamarack in Beckley.

“We are extremely pleased to host the Vintage Theatre Company once again,” Arts Center Executive Director Kurt Barkley.

“This is a truly professional troupe of actors, and their productions are really something to see,” Barkley continued.

Vintage Theatre Company founding producer and Artistic Director Jason Young said, “Elkins is one of the centers for great art in West Virginia. We are very proud of the relationship we have built with The Arts Center, and appreciative of all the support the community shows us. Since this is our third consecutive fall performance, we are expecting to see a lot of familiar faces, as well as some new on Saturday.”
