BEVERLY — The annual general membership meeting of the Randolph County Historical Society is scheduled for 7 p.m. Nov. 16 at the Beverly Heritage Center, located at 4 Court St. in Beverly.

The featured speaker for the evening will be Don Teter, portraying George Washington’s survey chainman. The public is invited to take a step back to 1780 for a visit with Edward Corder, who worked as a chainman for young surveyor George Washington on surveys for Lord Fairfax in Western Virginia in the days before the Revolution.

The portrayal will entertain guests with memories of working with Washington, and tales of the joys and dangers of surveying on the frontier. Teter will also demonstrate measuring distances in poles and links with the Gunter’s Chain, including the use of chaining pins and tally belts, and comment on the difficulties hindering accurate measurement.

The Randolph County Historical Society welcomes the public to its periodic historical programs, as well as to the Randolph County Museum in Beverly, which is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday through Saturday during the summer months, and for special events at other times.

More information is available by calling 304-637-7424.
