Veterans Day Parade to step off

ELKINS — Area groups will join with the community to honor all who served during the Elkins Veterans Day Parade beginning at 2 p.m. Saturday in downtown Elkins. The event will feature bands, veterans groups and service organizations.

Greeting the crowd as official parade marshals will be employees of the city of Elkins and Randolph County who have served in the armed forces. The Civil Air Patrol will serve as the color guard. Davis & Elkins College will be a part of the community event as well with members of the Student Veterans Association and the Squirrel Squad participating in the parade and more than 20 student-athletes assisting with traffic control.

Line-up begins at 12:30 p.m. at Southern States. The parade will begin on 11th Street, travel north on South Davis Avenue and end at Third Street.

Charles Ranew, Post 29 commander, said every branch of the service will be represented by veterans from a full range of wars and conflicts. He encourages the public to attend the parade to support those who helped guarantee Americans’ freedoms.

“These men and women can’t be forgotten,” Ranew said. “They deserve to be recognized.”

American flags will be placed along the parade route and Elkins Mayor Van Broughton plans to greet veterans at the end of the parade.

“It’s really important to thank all veterans for all they have done,” Broughton said. “We’ve had this parade for several years now and I hope everyone from our communities will come out to show their support for our veterans.”
