American Legion announces contest

MARLINTON — The Ninth District of the American Legion of West Virginia is inviting high school students to participate in its annual oratorical contest.

Students must be in the ninth through 12th grades, be a citizen or lawful permanent resident of the United States and be under the age of 20 by the district competition in Marlinton on Jan. 27, 2018. The contest is open to public school, accredited parochial schools and home-schooled students.

The student must give two speeches. The first will be a prepared oration about some aspect of the Constitution, which will give emphasis on the attendant duties and obligations of a citizen to American government and must be eight to 10 minutes in length.

The second speech will be on an assigned topic and must be three to five minutes in length. The assigned topic will be announced at the district competition.

The assigned topics for 2018 are: The Second Amendment; The Third Amendment; The 15th Amendment; and Article 2 Section 4 of the Constitution.

There are four levels of competition: district, sectional, state and national. Cash awards are presented to the winners at each level of competition. At the state level, the first-place winner will receive a $2,000 check and a four-year state college or university scholarship, and the winner will advance to the national competition.
