ELKINS — Eliana McCutcheon of Elkins has been chosen to receive a full, four-year scholarship valued at $115,200 to Davis & Elkins College.

McCutcheon competed for the award with 46 high-achieving high school seniors participating in Senator Leadership & Scholarship Day on the College campus on Nov. 11.

Students vying for the scholarship submitted essays and participated in interviews with a panel made up of a Davis & Elkins alumnus or alumna, a current student and a faculty member.

To be eligible to compete, students must have at least a 3.0 GPA and received acceptance to attend Davis & Elkins. Students also were required to submit a list of outstanding leadership honors or awards received and describe three skills that have strengthened them as leaders.

The 500-word essay consisted of a personal statement outlining areas of interest, life experiences, goals and commitment to leadership.

“Davis & Elkins College continues to attract highly talented and motivated students,” said D&E Vice President for Enrollment Management and Institutional Advancement Dr. Rosemary Thomas. “The competition for this award was fierce and we applaud Eliana for her success. We look forward to welcoming her and many others to join the D&E family next fall.”

McCutcheon is the daughter of Khristi and Mark McCutcheon of Elkins. She plans to study pre-veterinary medicine beginning in the fall 2018 semester.

“I am very blessed to have been given this opportunity and I’m honored to have been selected,” McCutcheon said. “I’m excited to start my new journey of becoming a leader as a Senator at D&E.”

At Elkins High School, McCutcheon has been a member of Future Business Leaders of America for three years and served a term as vice president. She also attended Rhododendron Girls State where she was elected as a senator.

Active in the West Virginia Highland Dancers, McCutcheon has earned honors locally and nationally. She competes at the premier and championship levels. In 2013, she won first place for her written exam in the British Association of Teachers of Dancing Conference and Sadie Simpson Scholarship Competition in Canada.

She completed her certification as an associate Highland dance teacher in 2016.

In addition to the top scholarship award, 10 students were selected for honorable mention awards of $1,000.
