ELKINS — National Wreaths Across America Day was celebrated at the Little Arlington Cemetery Dec. 16.

The event was hosted by the H.W. Daniels American Legion Post 29 in Elkins.

Members of the Elkins Composite Squadron of the Civil Air Patrol supported the event by selling wreaths on Veterans Day and placing wreaths on the graves of veterans on the day of the national event. Members placed wreaths on graves, saying the name of the veteran aloud and thanking them for their service to our country.

Wreaths Across America is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization founded to continue and expand the annual wreath-laying ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery begun by Maine businessman Morrill Worcester in 1992.

The organization’s mission — Remember, Honor, Teach — is carried out in part each year by coordinating wreath-laying ceremonies in December at Arlington National Cemetery, as well as at more than 1,200 veterans’ cemeteries and other locations in all 50 states and beyond. This annual event seeks to further the WAA mission of Remember, Honor, Teach, ensuring that the memory of those who served our country endures.
