D&E Speech and Debate Team earn awards

ELKINS — The Davis & Elkins College Speech and Debate Team continued its success placing in four categories at The Hatfields and McCoys Invitational Swing Tournament hosted by Marshall University and the University of Kentucky on Feb. 10.

Senior Emily Coffman of Elkins earned first place in the Radio Broadcasting category and sixth place in After Dinner Speaking.

Thaddeus Breckenridge, a sophomore from Beckley, placed fifth in the Public Debate category.

Together, Coffman and Breckenridge placed fifth in Overall Team Performance.

Other schools in attendance at the tournament were Ball State University, Boyce College, Grove City College, Marshall University, Shepherd University, University of Kentucky, University of Pikeville and University of Virginia.

Last month, Coffman and sophomore Emily Alexander of Strasburg, Virginia, attended the Collegiate Forensic Association Winter Tournament in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. While there, Coffman placed first in the After Dinner Speaking category, fifth in Lincoln-Douglas Debate and sixth in Prose Interpretation.

The D&E team’s recent achievements follow on its successes from last semester, when Coffman placed first in After Dinner Speaking, second in Impromptu Speaking, third in Lincoln-Douglas Debate and received the top individual speaker honors in Parliamentary Debate at the CFA tournament at Lord Fairfax Community College in Middleton, Virginia. At the CFA tournament at Lynchburg College in Lynchburg, Virginia, Coffman placed third in Impromptu Speaking.

The team next travels to the West Virginia Intercollegiate Forensics Association State Tournament on the Fairmont State University campus Feb. 24-25 and the Collegiate Forensics Association Tournament in Ocean City, Maryland, March 2-3.

On campus, the Speech and Debate Team will host a public debate at 7 p.m. Feb. 21 in Eshleman Science Center Room 400. The topic is “Davis & Elkins College Should Create a Black Student Union.” Two other public debates are being planned with dates and topics to be announced.

Davis & Elkins College also is scheduled to host the high school state speech and debate tournament, set for March 16-17.
