College students offer free tax preparation

ELKINS — Davis & Elkins College accounting and finance majors are gaining real-world experience while helping community members in need of their skills.

As participants in the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program, the students are providing free tax return preparation.

Students are available at the Elkins Randolph County Public Library on Saturday mornings through April 14. Appointments can be made by going to the library or calling 304-637-0287.

“We are pleased to be able to offer this service to the community at-large and give students the opportunity to apply the knowledge they learned in the classroom to help others,” said Dr. Carol Carter, chairperson of the Division of Business and Entrepreneurship. “The students also learn more interpersonal skills by interacting with their clients.”

The students participating in VITA have received training and certification from the Internal Revenue Service to help prepare basic tax returns, and are under the supervision of Tom Preston, Davis & Elkins College assistant professor of accounting.

According to the IRS, services through the VITA program are offered free of charge to people who generally make $54,000 or less, people with disabilities and limited English speaking taxpayers who need assistance in preparing their own tax returns.

Tax clients should bring their wage and tax statement, information for other income, a photo ID for the taxpayer and spouse, Social Security cards for everyone listed on the return, a copy of last year’s tax return, information for all deductions or credits, total paid to day care provider and their tax ID number and medical insurance information.

The Davis & Elkins accounting program is one of 12 business-related programs that are accredited by the International Assembly for Collegiate Business Education. Students studying accounting may opt for a Bachelor of Science or Associate in Science degree.

The accounting curriculum is designed to promote students’ understanding of accounting theory and their ability to apply accounting principles in the business environment.
