Garlick

ELKINS — Kate M. Garlick has been appointed assistant dean of students at Davis & Elkins College. She began her new position at the start of the fall semester.

“Davis & Elkins is very pleased to welcome Kate Garlick to our Student Life team,” said D&E President Chris A. Wood. “She brings to this new position a wealth of transferable skills as well as a passion for the success of our students. Her appointment is another step as we lead the way by improving student services and moving D&E to distinction and excellence.”

In this capacity, Garlick will enhance the learning environment through student involvement in co-curricular and extra-curricular programming, assessment and program review, and leadership development. She will work directly with students and provide strategic supervision, leadership, and programmatic, budget and operational oversight for student activities, residence life, student critical incidents, Student Affairs administration and student leadership initiatives.

As a member of the leadership team in Student Affairs, Garlick will assist Vice President for Student Affairs Scott Goddard in various areas including facilitating leadership initiatives and developing policies and procedures.

“Kate brings many talents to Davis & Elkins College,” Goddard said. “She is a dynamic young professional and a proven administrative leader. In this role, I know that Kate will encourage and support students throughout their D&E journey, helping to connect them with everything from health and well-being resources to leadership development and community engagement opportunities. Kate is well-prepared to effectively impart an understanding of what it means for students to be a productive part of a diverse community of scholars full of many voices, beliefs and experiences. I look forward to working side by side with Kate to enrich the co-curricular experience for the students we serve.”

Originally from Fairmont, Garlick brings management skills, along with 10 years of experience working with youth in various settings, and with adults and families in the human services field.

Garlick comes to D&E from the General Federation of Women’s Clubs (GFWC) where she served as membership services manager at the organization’s international headquarters in Washington, D.C. There, she developed and maintained the membership database and managed all donations, among other duties.

Prior to working at the GFWC, Garlick was employed by Blueprints, formerly Try-Again Homes, in Fairmont. She began as a caseworker and was promoted to West Virginia Specialized Foster Care program director. She also has been employed as a waiver service coordinator at Valley HealthCare System in North Central West Virginia, a community living manager at Target Community and Education Services Inc. in Maryland and a respite care provider for Valley HealthCare System.

In addition to her professional career, Garlick has attended and volunteered for the American Legion Auxiliary West Virginia Rhododendron Girls State since 2003.

“I am honored to be joining Davis & Elkins College as assistant dean of students and am looking forward to working with the amazing students, staff and faculty,” Garlick said. “This is truly a wonderful opportunity and I am grateful to be back home in West Virginia.”

Garlick holds a Bachelor of Arts in psychology from Wheeling Jesuit University in Wheeling and a Master of Science in human services management in special education from McDaniel College in Westminster, Maryland.
