Archaeological dig planned at Graceland site

ELKINS – History is represented all around us, even in the places not normally visible. Staff members of The Stirrup Gallery at Davis & Elkins College are hoping to uncover some additional pieces of history with an archaeological dig and demonstration at 10 a.m. Sunday, October 21 near Graceland on the College campus.

The dig, encompassing a 6-square-foot space, will be led by AmeriCorps volunteer Kelsey Maloy who will explain the process and guide visitors who wish to participate. Tools will be provided, and the event is free and open to the public.

“This is a very intriguing way for the community to connect with their local history,” Maloy said. “What we will be doing is appropriate for all ages. We’re especially excited for youth to get involved because they might gain an interest in archaeology, and you never know where that might take them.”

The Stirrup Gallery staff selected an area near Graceland that hasn’t been heavily disturbed throughout the years. The event will give participants what Maloy calls a “small sample” of what takes place during an archaeological dig. Other similar activities may be planned in the future.

“We may find glass, metal, other bits of historical items,” Maloy said. “Then again, you never know what we could come up with.”

A 2018 graduate of Western Washington University with a Bachelor of Arts degrees in archaeology and visual media, Maloy has worked on domestic and foreign archaeological projects. She has been working with The Stirrup Gallery as an AmeriCorps since September.
