Valley Head homecoming activities set

VALLEY HEAD — The Valley Head homecoming committee is happy to announce the addition of a new activity to their homecoming weekend schedule. The very first Valley Head Homecoming Memorial ATV Ride is scheduled for Sunday at 11 a.m.

ATV riders will begin at the Valley Head Community Center and will visit many of the cemeteries in the area. The ride will end at the community center where hot dogs, chips and drinks will be available to purchase.

This ride is just a part of a jam-packed homecoming weekend. On Friday, at 7 .m. at the Valley Head School gymnasium, the queen coronation will take place. The Mountain Livestock 4-H club will sponsor a bake sale and the Community Center will be selling hot dogs. There will be a raffle and a limited number of T-shirts will be for sale. Essay and art contest winners will be announced.

Saturday will begin with a pancake breakfast from 8-11 a.m. at the fire hall sponsored by the Valley Head Fire Department. Beginning at 9 a.m. on Newt Wood’s porch, the Mingo District Historical Society will have authors Don Teter and Steve Bodkins available to sign their books and chat with folks about their memories of the area.

There will also be a raffle for an antique shotgun and other items. Beginning at 10 a.m. on the porch, the Calvary Assembly of God church will be selling refreshments. They also will be having a silent auction at their church outreach center on Route 219.

The Grand Feature Parade will begin at 1 p.m. and there will be canopies and chairs set up next to the porch for those attending to continue their meet and greet after the parade.

Continuing on Saturday at the Valley Head Community Center at 4 p.m., there will be a cakewalk and a dinner of barbecue, baked beans, salads, desserts, and drinks. At 5 p.m., Bodkins will do a presentation on the 1791 kidnapping of Mary Kinnan.

At 6:30 p.m. at the Valley Head United Methodist Church, there will be a gospel sing.

On Sunday at 11 a.m., the ATV Memorial ride starts at the community center. Closing ceremonies and a memorial service will begin at 4 p.m. at the Valley Head United Methodist Church.

Lastly, on Monday at noon, a Memorial Day service honoring all veterans will be held at the Civil War statue on Mingo Flats Road. The Mace church choir will provide music.
