W.Va. exhibits set at The Arts Center

ELKINS — As part of a month-long celebration of all things West Virginia, The Arts Center will present three exhibits opening today.

All three exhibits will run at the same time, and have a common theme, a celebration of the state of West Virginia, culminating in a reception on West Virginia Day, Thursday, June 20 from 6 to 8 p.m. These exhibits and the reception are free and open to the public.

The first is an art exhibit, “Celebrate West Virginia!” which features art inspired by the state’s natural beauty and history, and will be displayed in The Arts Center’s Great Hall. With works by more than 20 West Virginia artists, this exhibit includes paintings, folk sculpture, photography, and award-winning taxidermy.

Also in the Great Hall will be the West Virginia Humanities Council’s traveling exhibit, “The Hatfields and McCoys: American Blood Feud.” The exhibit traces the history of the famous family feud in southern West Virginia and Kentucky in the late 1800’s, and was illustrated by students from West Virginia University’s graphic design program.

The third exhibit will be in The Arts Center’s Maxwell Gallery, consisting of Charleston artist Chet Lowther’s solo show. Born in Ireland, W.Va., he moved to Charleston in 2001. After receiving his degree in Art Education from Fairmont State University, he teaches art and runs his own studio and gallery on Hale Street in downtown Charleston. Working with acrylic, oils, and encaustic media (painting using melted beeswax), Chet has created a collection of landscapes depicting West Virginia in full, vibrant color.

The Arts Center’s Executive Director, Kurt Barkley, said, “These three exhibits, running at the same time, cannot be missed by anyone with a love for this state. All of this incredible art, history, and culture on display at one time, makes for a very special exhibit.”
