The Robert C. Byrd Aerospace Education Center has been nationally recognized by the Civil Air Patrol.

The school was presented with the 2019 Frank G. Brewer Memorial Aerospace Award as recognition of their outstanding contributions to the advancement of youth in aerospace education.

Capt Bruce Dawson of Buckhannon, aerospace education officer for the Elkins Composite Squadron, Civil Air Patrol and an aviation instructor at the center, nominated the school for the award. The nomination was the winning submission from the seven state Mid-Atlantic Region.

In his nomination, Dawson noted the years of support that RCBAEC has provided to any organization that wished to promote Science Technology Engineering and Math (STEM) activities, especially as it pertained to the aerospace industry. Dawson wrote that RCB was key to the success of the first ever Civil Air Patrol WV Wing Cadet Aerospace Education Weekend. He noted “Cadet Aviation Weekend provided participants with a foundation in scientific principles and an introduction to aerospace career opportunities”.

During the presentation of the regional award, it was announced that the center has officially been named as the 2019 national winner of the Brewer Award.

This award will be presented at the Civil Air Patrol’s national conference in August.
