Storm systems move into area

Two storm systems moving through the area this week will produce snow as well as continued cold temperatures, according to National Weather Service forecasts.

Tim Axford, an NWS meteorologist, said a storm system is currently moving across the Midwest and will reach the Elkins area today.

While speaking to the Inter-Mountain Wednesday, Axford said the storm “will swing through until sunrise (today).”

It will be a quick-moving storm, he said, a system that is not typical of winter weather. The brief storm may produce one to three inches of snow in Elkins and up to four inches in higher elevations.

Following the storm, residents should see a rise in temperatures, compared to highs in the teens on Wednesday. Today should boast highs in the mid-20s, with lows in the single digits.

Axford said Friday will be equally as warm, with no significant rise in temperature compared to today.

On Friday, however, a second, seasonally-typical storm system is predicted to hit the area.

“It’s a more traditional system,” Axford said of the storm that will reach Elkins mid-day Friday. He said it will be bringing along moisture from the Great Lakes, leading to greater snowfall totals than today’s system.

Through Axford stressed that the storm will not be a major weather event, Elkins residents are predicted to see two to four inches of snow in lower elevations, and three to six in upper elevations.

The system will wrap up by mid-day Saturday, Axford said. Temperatures Saturday will only climb to the low-20s, with lows in the mid-teens.

Sunday morning will be warmer, with the air reaching temperatures in the low-30s by the afternoon.

The following days will be even warmer, with highs in the low-40s on Monday and low-50s on Tuesday.

Lows for Sunday will be in the single digits, for Monday in the mid-20s, and for Tuesday in the low 30s.

Some precipitation is expected to accompany the warmer weather, Axford said, and residents in higher elevations can expect a winter mix of rain and snow on Tuesday and Wednesday.
