Arrest made in beer bottle brouhaha

A preliminary hearing and bond reduction hearing will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday in Upshur County Magistrate Court for a 22-year-old man accused of striking a woman with a beer bottle during an incident Saturday at the Bobcat Lounge in Buckhannon.

Melvin Antonio Tyler, whose address is listed as both 182 Camden Ave., Buckhannon, and 12302 Winbrook Drive, Clinton, Md. in court records is being held in the Tygart Valley Regional Jail in lieu of an $85,000 bond. He is facing a misdemeanor charge of battery and a felony charge of malicious/unlawful assault.

According to the criminal complaint filed in Magistrate Court, a woman inside the bar allegedly threw a glass of water at Tyler. Tyler first finished the remaining beer inside the glass bottle and then allegedly struck the woman in the face with the empty bottle, according to the complaint. The woman fell to the floor and was reported to have been bleeding profusely. The complaint stated she was taken to St. Joseph’s Hospital in Buckhannon, where six stitches were need to close the cut.

Tyler was then asked to leave the bar, which he initially refused, the complaint stated. He then exited the bar and sat in the back of a vehicle parked outside the Bobcat Lounge.

Another woman assisting the injured person reportedly saw Tyler sitting in the vehicle. The complaint stated Tyler began yelling obscenities at the second woman and then alleged spit in her face.

As part of the bond conditions, Tyler is to have no contact with either of the two women while the case is proceeding.
