Barbour BOE to consider terminating middle school coaches

The proposed termination of approximately 53 extracurricular contracts – including middle school sports coaches and assistant coaches – is on the agenda for approval during Monday’s Barbour County Board of Education meeting. The reason listed for the reduction is a lack of funding and/or need.

The agenda for the 6 p.m. Monday meeting at the Board of Education Office in Philippi was released Thursday.

Proposed eliminations also include math field day coaches, SAT chairs and science fair coordinators.

The Barbour All County Sports Organization was formed by concerned parents in January in anticipation of the possible loss of middle school sports in the county. The group is planning activities to save the sports programs, and members have addressed the Barbour Board of Education, showing their support and the need for middle school sports.

A Facebook post on the Barbour All County Sports Organization advises followers that the “board of education agenda for Feb. 11 includes voting on the termination of coaching positions for middle school sports. We’ll be attending this meeting and would like community support there also!”
