Master Gardener classes to take place

Beginning in March, a series of volunteer training classes for home garderners will be offered by the WVU Extension Service.

Tri-county Master Gardener classes – intended to service residents of Tucker, Randolph and Barbour counties – will begin on Tuesday, March 5. An extension office press release said classes will take place between the hours of 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. every Tuesday, through May 7, at the WVU Extension Office conference room in Barbour County.

Josh Peplowski, Barbour County Extension Agent, spoke to the Inter-Mountain about what residents can expect from the classes.

“It’s a 10-week course, 30 hours, three hours each night,” he said.

Peplowski said different speakers will lead classes, all of which cover different topics related to gardening. The topics include soils and fertilization, plant propagation, entomology and pesticides, plant diseases, vegetable production, small fruits and pruning, composting and organic matter, good agriculture handling practices and marketing.

Extension office fliers said there will be a pre-test the first week and a post-test the final week, both used to gauge progress and ensure certification.

Following the completion of the 10-week course, the Peplowski said, participants will be certified to provide their experience and knowledge of gardening with others.

This includes an obligation to donate 30 hours of community service in the coming year. The extension office press release said residents can volunteer through the extension office in ways that include educational programs, on-farm demonstrations and field days.

Certified residents may also work with youth or suggest to the extension office other ways in which community service may be fulfilled.

Registration for classes will continue until March 1, the deadline for class sign-ups.
