Winter storm to bring rain, snow to area

A major winter storm is expected to slam the Northeastern U.S., and remnants of the storm are likely to reach our area today, officials said.

The storm is expected to cause possible blizzard conditions in New England. Snowfall totals of 1 to 2 feet are expected from the Eastern great lakes into the northeast.

Elkins and surrounding areas might see some rain and snow showers from this storm. Liz Sommerville, from the National Weather Service in Charleston, said rain and snow showers are expected to begin today after 5 p.m.

“Snow accumulations for the area should be 2.5 inches or less,” Sommerville said. “Watch out for the cold temperatures that could be 18 degrees Friday night and 14 degrees Saturday night. Low temperatures, combined with gusty winds, will be the major concern.”

Sommerville said winds Friday night will be 9 to 14 miles per hour with gusts up to 28 miles per hour.

On Saturday night, winds will range from 13 to 21 miles per hour with gusts up to 24 miles per hour.
