EMS hopes to win grant
Students at Elkins Middle School are asking for the community’s help. In January, performing arts instructor Danielle Riggins applied for an NBC SMASH Make a Musical grant. This week, Elkins Middle School officials were notified that the school is one of 30 finalists.
“We are thrilled to be included in the running,” Riggins said. “Any monies received would be used to upgrade the performing arts area.”
Riggins said the flooring on the stage in the school dates to when the building was constructed in the 1950s.
“The school needs new flooring on the stage, lighting upgrades and a new sound system,” Riggins said. “Right now our school is fourth with votes, and grants are awarded to the five schools receiving the most votes. We would love to have everyone’s help with votes.”
To vote for Elkins Middle School, go to makeamusical.org and click on “Time to vote.” Find Elkins Middle School, which is located on the second line, and click to vote.
“Folks are allowed one vote every 24 hours from every electronic device you have,” Riggins said. “We must be in the top five to receive any money, and voting ends April 10.”
Riggins said the EMS students are very excited about this program.
“They are all talking about it,” she said. “They have said they think it is really cool, and they hope to win.”
