Grant allows school to purchase calculators

Calculators used by Homestead Elementary School’s third-, fourth- and fifth-graders were in need of updating, and Principal Diane Hull said a surprise grant will help fulfill that need.

“A surprise grant check came in the mail,” Hull said. “The grant was from Exxon Mobile for math and science. We were nominated for this grant by the Par Mar in Dailey.”

Hull said this is the third grant the school has received in the last 10 years. The teachers and students plan to make a thank-you poster for the Par Mar to put in the store.

The students use calculators each day in math and on a standardized test called the WESTEST, and the calculators that were being used were from 2009.

“Lots of the calculators had buttons missing and some just did not work,” Hull said. “It is important for students to be fluent with the calculators, just as it is important for students to be fluent readers. The calculators need to be in their hands well before the WESTEST so they are comfortable using them. We are so grateful for the grant and the opportunity to help our students.”
