RESA-7 assists Tucker BOE

The Tucker County Board of Education heard from the county superintendent this week about details concerning recent assistance from Regional Education Service Agencies.

Dr. Eddie Campbell, the superintendent of Tucker County Schools, told the Board Monday that RESA-7 provided their assistance to county schools following the Educational Efficiency Audit completed by Public Works LLC this past January. Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin approved the audit in 2012 and, upon its announcement, officials at the various Tucker County schools were alerted to issues within the school system that needed improvement.

The issue most focused on by Campbell during the meeting was that of Individual Education Programs associated with the county’s special education programs. He said the audit revealed that teachers had not been filling them out correctly. To remedy this, RESA-7 was contacted.

He said he worked with RESA-7 officials to sift through IEP files and find out the problems identified in the audit.

“RESA-7 targeted the deficiencies that were identified for us (in the audit),” Campbell said.

The biggest problem with the IEPs, Campbell said, was that the goals in each program were not being clearly defined.

He said teachers had not received training for IEPs in several years. The programs can change every year, and it is not hard to get out of practice, he said.

In addition, he said, it appeared that teachers had been using templates provided for them at their most recent training sessions. When template updates were not performed then teachers were left with antiquated information.

A new training session has been scheduled in conjunction with RESA-7 for late April, Campbell said.

“I think we are going to be in good shape when the state revisits us,” he said.

In other news, the following personnel decisions were made at the Monday meeting:

– Effective June 30, Teresa Simmons will resign as the superintendent’s secretary, food service director and certification clerk.

– Coleen Dykstra’s professional personnel continuting contracts for the 2013-2014 school year were approved.

– James Gilbert, Rachel Landes and Jill Evick were approved as new county substitute teachers for the 2013-2014 school year.

– John Bava, Michael Calaway and Steve Minear were approved as new service personnel substitutes for the 2013-2014 school year.
