Bands to compete in festival

Middle and high school bands from Barbour, Randolph, Upshur, Braxton, Lewis, Tucker and Pocahontas counties are scheduled to perform before judges this weekend for the Region VIII Band Festival at Philip Barbour High School.

This will be the first year the band festival will be at PBHSp. In previous years, the festival performances took place at Elkins High School. PBHS band director Victor Iapalucci said that the event will be free and open to the public.

“I’m excited to have the opportunity to showcase our facility at PBHS and have the opportunity to provide everyone with the best educational experience that they can possibly have,” Iapalucci said.

Each band will perform a musical piece to be scored by the panel of judges; however, the performances are not competitive. The band’s performance will be based upon the standard difficulty of each piece it performs. The musical selections are rated by difficulty on a scale of one to six, one being the easiest. The bands will be rated on a scale of one to five, one being the highest score.

The judges will separately rate each band, and the final score will be a combination of the judges’ rating.
