Council declines to fill position

Elkins City Council voted against appointing either of the two residents who applied to fill Mayor Van Broughton’s former 2nd Ward council seat Thursday.

After returning from a 30-minute executive session, all nine council members voted “no” to a motion to appoint John Meader to fill the seat.

Immediately after that vote, all nine members voted against appointing Jerry Corley to the position.

Councilman Carman Metheny then made a motion for the city to readvertise for applicants for the position. All nine members voted in favor of the motion. The position will be advertised 10 times during a 20-day period.

Broughton had to abandon his seat after winning the March mayoral election.
