New airport building leased
After negotiations with two firms regarding the occupancy of the newly added incubator building at the Philippi/Barbour County Regional Airport, President Dean Springer said he knows who will occupy the building, but said he wasn’t telling just yet.
Springer announced the news at this week’s meeting of Philippi City Council. The incubator building allows for double occupancy, and Springer said both sides of it have been leased for 18 to 24 months.
“I won’t say who it is yet, but it looks like the building is leased and ready to go,” Springer said. “I think it’s all good news for the airport.”
Since the recent completion of the incubator building, another building project has been on tap for the local airport. It is funded by the United States Department of Agriculture in the amount of $200,000, according to a Barbour County Development Authority newsletter. The building project will provide new hangar spaces large enough for a jet or up to three small planes, the newsletter said.
Springer also announced a three-year audit was conducted of the Airport Authority. The certified audit reports minimal deficiencies. One deficiency noted is the airport’s secretary doubles as the treasurer. He said small organizations often do not have different people to perform both roles.
The other deficiency noted on the report was a lack of a capitalization program for purposes of depreciation. Springer said that only applies for tax purposes, but the airport is not a tax-paying entity. Nevertheless, to satisfy the auditors, Springer said the capitalization program will be adopted at the next Airport Authority meeting.
