Vocalist to present senior recital

Abebrum Schoonover will present his senior vocal recital beginning at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in Wilcox Chapel on the campus of Alderson-Broaddus College.

Schoonover is the son of Shauna and Rick Bloom of Terra Alta, and Randell Schoonover and Judith Loughry of Kingwood. He is a 2008 graduate of Preston High School, where he received the Wills Family Music Scholarship. He attends Wesley united Methodist Church in Kingwood.

While at Alderson-Broaddus, he has sung in the concert choir, chamber ensemble, chapel choir and praise band, and played trumpet in the concert band, jazz ensemble, brass choir and trumpet ensemble. He has been the lead singer in the barbershop quartet for three years, both a section leader and assistant director of this year’s concert choir , and currently tours with A-B’s music ambassadors, “The West Virginians.”

Over the 2008 Christmas break, Schoonover, was privileged to be a featured soloist at St. Peter’s Basilica, The Vatican, during the Concert Choir’s tour of Italy and at Carnegie Hall, New York City, in 2010.

Before being selected as an assistant director for the 2013 edition of the Evening of Opera Highlights, he was featured in the role of Ramphis the High Priest, in Verdi’s Aida in 2009, and in 2011 sang the role of Sir Ruthven Murgatroyd disguised as Robin Oakapple in Ruddigore by Gilbert and Sullivan.

In the A-B production of the musical “Working,” he sang the role of Mike Dilliard, a steel worker and the show’s unofficial narrator, and in 2012 was recognized for his comedic timing in his portrayal of Nathan Detroit in the college’s musical production of “Guys and Dolls.”

In the 2011 National Association of Teachers of Singing contest for the West Virginia region, Schoonover was awarded first place in both the opera and musical theatre categories, as well as first place in the Senior Men’s division.

The recital will feature Schoonover singing songs of the stage and silver screen, accompanied by Lillian Long, assistant professor of music.
