Belington EMS seeks support

When tragedy strikes, people in the emergency squad are the first to respond.

Have you ever thought about what they were doing when that call went out? Sometimes they just sat down to dinner with their family, or they are at a son or daughter’s ball game. But they drop what they are doing and run to our aid.

They are some of the first to help when we need them, and now in Belington, they are asking for our help.

The Belington Emergency Squad is selling raffle tickets through 7 p.m. Saturday. The cost of a ticket is $100, and it includes three chances to win. The top prize is a 2013 Dodge Challenger from Town and Country Chrysler. The taxes, title and license fees are paid for the grand prize winner.

Second-place prize is a 2005 Jayco travel trailer. This 29-foot camper sleeps eight.

Also included in these wins is a voucher, which entitles the holder to a guarantee of no out-of-pocket expense should the person or a family member ever need the services of Belington Emergency Squad.

“With 24-hour, seven-day-a-week staffing, fundraisers such as this are a necessity because call volume alone is not enough to meet the expenses,” said Joey Bolyard, director of Belington Emergency Squad. “EMS is one of the most vital of all emergency services and is important to the citizens of Barbour County.”

This fundraiser will help fund the purchase a new ambulance and obtain a new building. With an average of 1,300 to 1,400 calls a year, many miles have been put on the old ambulances. As the vehicles get older, they tend to break down, and a reliable ambulance is essential.

With a leaky roof and costly repairs on the current building, added to the fact that they need more space, another location to house the squad is also important.

A minimum of 400 tickets have to be sold by 7 p.m. Saturday in order for this fundraiser to be profitable.

A tent has been set up at the red light in Belington where tickets will be sold until midnight today. On Saturday, starting at 9 a.m., the tent will be moved to Town and Country Chrysler and will remain until 7 p.m., when the drawing will take place.

Anyone who wants additional ticket information can call Joey at 304-621-2787 or Suzanna at 304-621-1802.
