Glass auction set for Friday
The West Virginia Museum of American Glass is sponsoring a “Made in West Virginia” glass auction on Friday.
All items are donated and 20 percent of the proceeds from each sale will go to benefit the museum. Fully donated pieces allow 100 percent of the gavel price of the piece to go to the museum.
The auction is part of a season-wide bicentennial celebration, lauding 200 years of glass production in the state. Around 150 lots of glass are offered at the auction from artisans from all over West Virginia, from oversized Blenko pieces and masterworks made at Pilgrim Glass in Ceredo in the 1900’s, to pieces from Riverside Glassworks dating back to the 1800’s.
Other selections include early Fenton Art Glass pieces, Weston Glass pieces and Central Glass Company pieces among others. Items include vases, pitcher and glass sets, bowls, glass animals, decanters and many more.
Renowned glass artisans Kelsey Murphy and Ryan Hinkle, both of whom are from West Virginia, donated items for the auction, including one of Murphy’s specialty Cameo pieces.
Tom Felt, a volunteer and member of the board of directors for the Museum, explained that the collection is representative of all the glassware produced in West Virginia.
“There were 450 glass producers in the state originally,” Felt said, “Only five remain today, including independent glass artists.”
Felt works to identify, research and archive various pieces that come into the Museum.
“It really is an opportunity to celebrate glassware making in West Virginia and throughout the country,” Felt said about the work of the Museum.
The auction is not only a fund-raising opportunity and a celebration; it is also a chance for the Museum to show off its collection.
“Everyone should come and view the glass,” said Sharon Pickens, the office manager at the Museum, “There’s so much for everyone to see.”
The auction will begin at 7 p.m. at the West Virginia Museum of American Glass located at 230 Main Avenue in Weston.
