Mountains Beckon Street Fair to celebrate outdoors May 18
From Staff Reports
Elkins ON TRAC invites families to enjoy fun and games in downtown Elkins May 18 during the third annual Mountains Beckon Bicycle Parade & Street Fair.
The event will begin at 10 a.m. with a traditional, small-town bicycle parade. The parade will follow Davis Avenue from Fifth Street to Third Street, which will be closed to traffic from Davis Avenue to Mary’s Lane for the street fair.
The parade is open to participants of all ages, according to Mike Ellis, chair of the ON TRAC Promotion Committee.
“Whether you are young or young at heart, everyone is invited to participate,” Ellis said.
A free bicycle safety inspection will be provided by Joey’s Bike Shop on Third Street immediately following the parade. Games and activities will continue until 2 p.m.
Participants are invited to dress up and decorate bikes for the parade. Sponsored by The Inter-Mountain, awards will be presented by judges from the newspaper in six categories, including “Creative Use of Newspaper.”
“The Inter-Mountain is excited about taking part in this growing, family oriented event,” said Matthew Burdette, the newspaper’s executive editor. “Events like these are not only helping to spur the revival of downtown Elkins, but they truly bring the community closer together. We are thrilled to be able to team up with the hardworking folks at Elkin ON TRAC to make our community better and brighter.”
Other categories are “School Spirit,” “Color Crazy,” “Sparkle & Shine,” “Mountaineer Proud” and “Mayor’s Choice,” which will be presented by Mayor Van Broughton.
The Mountaineer Proud award recognizes the state’s 150th birthday.
Special prizes will also be awarded by Joey’s Bike Shop.
All parade participants must wear helmets and closed shoes. A parent or guardian must sign for all children under age 18, and small children must be accompanied by an adult on foot.
The Elkins Police Department will provide a cruiser to lead the way down Davis Avenue, and a fire engine, courtesy of the Elkins Fire Department, will follow the route to Third Street.
Registration for the parade will take place in the parking lot behind City Hall beginning at 9 a.m. The first 25 registrants age 12 or younger will receive free event T-shirts, sponsored by Pioneer Insurance Agency and TD’s Classic Tees. Other event sponsors include Henry G’s, Joey’s Bike Shop, Papa John’s, The Inter-Mountain and WDNE 98.9 FM.
The street fair also will feature games and activities presented in partnership with the Family Resource Network. FRN will provide a duck pond, corn hole, ball and ring toss games and other activities.
Limbo and hula hoop competitions also will take place. Bubbles, balloons and other surprises also might be in store for participants during the event.
The Promotion Committee created street fair events in 2011 to help increase activity in the downtown area. Fairs were named to correspond with the Elkins ON TRAC slogan, “Mountains Beckon, Artists Gather, History Lives.”
The third annual Artists Gather event will take place Aug. 2 in conjunction with First Friday.
A History Lives event also is planned to showcase a historic property in the downtown area.
