Students graduate Youth Build

After nearly a year of hard work, study and preparation, nine students completed the YouthBuild program in Elkins Friday. YouthBuild Director Jason Vandevender praised the students for completing the program.

“I am really proud of these young men,” Vandevender said. “I have only been with them for two weeks, but I see a lot of potential in every one of them. I look forward to their future accomplishments. They have all given a lot to the community.”

Completers had the opportunity to help in community service projects including recycling at North Elementary School, working with Catholic Charities West Virginia, working with Destiny Tabernacle, building the new building at Glendale Park, assisting disabled citizens within the community, helping with home remodeling and helping with the Great Tygart Valley River Cleanup.

While working in the program, students had the opportunity to earn their State of West Virginia GED, OSHA training, first aid card, CPR and AED training certificate, Home Ownership Training, Food Handlers Permit and PACT Certification.

Graduates for 2012 to 2013 are Brett Arbogast, Matt Johnson, Silmer White, Caleb Gartmann, Rodney Palubicki, Brentt Hahn, Russell Jenkins, Seth Nelson and Donald Rowan.

The next YouthBuild class will begin June 3.

“This program will last for 10 months,” Vandevander said. “We are hoping to have a class of about 20 students.”
