Upshur Commission accepts resignation

Upshur County commissioners officially accepted the resignation of long-time county administrator Willie Parker Thursday following a short executive session where they reviewed allegations of discriminatory actions with an outside attorney.

Parker submitted his letter indicating his decision to leave the job he has held for more than 20 years on Wednesday, citing personal reasons. He was unable to be reached for comment. Commission president Donnie Tenney would not say if the resignation and the allegations were related.

“The information is all confidential,” he said.

Tenney, the commissioner who has worked the longest with Parker, said there has been a lot accomplished in the years Parker has served as the county’s administrator. Tenney said the county is better off financially because of Parker’s work.

“We certainly wish him well in his future endeavors,” Tenney said.

Commissioners deferred taking any action on the resignation letter during their morning session Thursday, as Commissioner JC Raffety asked that it be delayed until after the group could meet with attorney Timothy Stranko in the afternoon. No other comments regarding the matter were made during the morning session.

Stranko had been retained by the commissioners following an hour-long special meeting on April 23 held almost entirely in a closed-door executive session where allegations of a discriminatory action were discussed. Parker and Sheriff Dave Coffman were involved in those discussions at various times and neither were involved for the entire meeting, according to the minutes approved at Thursday’s meeting of the county commission. Commissioners have declined to discuss the nature and origin of those allegations.

Parker’s resignation letter only indicated that his decision to submit his resignation came after a discussion with Tenney on Monday. Tenney did not elaborate on those talks.

Assistant county administrator Megan Pomeroy will assume Parker’s duties while the commissioners decide if they are going to seek a new person for the job. Pomeroy started as the assistant administrator in September 2012.
