Upshur Commission awards scholarships
The Upshur County Commission awarded its annual James W. Curry Scholarship Thursday to Seth Blake and Nathaniel Matthews.
The scholarship will pay each student $1,000 annually for the next two years. The scholarship was set up to award deserving students graduating from high school a chance to further their education in a two- or four-year post-secondary program. To receive the second year’s award, the students must maintain their academic eligibility as set forth by the scholarship requirements.
In other matters, the commissioners signed a resolution proclaiming May 18-27 as a “Special Salute to all members of the Armed Forces.”
The commissioners approved a request from the Buckhannon Swim Club to host the Catherine “Splash” Williams Invitational Long Course Swim Meet at 7:30 a.m. June 29 at the Upshur County Pool. The date had been changed, organizers said, to better accommodate a summer swimming schedule with the Central West Virginia Swim League. About 150 swimmers are expected to take part in the event. The pool will open about an hour later that day for public use.
