Severe weather could miss area

The National Weather Service in Charleston is calling for showers and thunderstorms in the coming days, but officials said no severe weather is expected in this area.

Joe Merchant, a meteorologist from the National Weather Service in Charleston, said a narrow band of showers is expected to dissipate today and redevelop Wednesday night, culminating in rain and potential thunderstorms.

On Monday, a flash flood warning was issued until 6 p.m. However, no warnings or advisories had been issued for the rest of the week as of presstime.

Jim Wise of the Randolph County Office of Emergency Management said he has faith in the National Weather Service’s forecast.

“They tend to be pretty accurate,” Wise said. “There’s not much to worry about (in Randolph County) as of now.”

Other outlets have predicted more severe weather later in the week, however. An article from accuweather.com said “complexes of strong, drenching and locally severe thunderstorms” are to “reach parts of South Dakota and Nebraska to Illinois, Ohio, western Pennsylvania and the Virginias.”

The article also predicts that part of this area “could be hit by an intense thunderstorm complex, known as a derecho,” just like the storm that struck much of West Virginia last summer and knocked out power service for days.

The National Weather Service has yet to announce any indication of such severe weather in the area.
