D&E forming children’s choir

Davis & Elkins College and Elizabeth Marshall-MacVean are looking for talented local singers as they start recruiting for the area’s first ever community children’s choir.

“This is an exciting opportunity for children who love to sing,” said Marshall-MacVean, the founding director of the children’s chorus. “If they have a willingness to learn and like to sing we’d love to work with them.”

Marshall-MacVean, a certified music teacher and choral director, wanted to form the choir to give children a musical outlet in the area. She got the word out in the form of 1,200 fliers sent to all the elementary schools in the county.

“There’s really nothing like this for them to participate in within the area,” she explained. “This gives them the opportunity to get an interest in music that could last throughout the rest of their lives.”

Students will learn vocal techniques and sing quality choral literature for children. They will also work with accompanist Donna Baroudi-Huffman. Rehearsals will be weekly on Mondays, beginning on Sept. 9 and ending on Dec. 9 in the D&E Chapel. There are plans for two performances per year, one in December and one in May.

At least 25 children are needed to get the program started, but more would be welcome, Marshall-MacVean said.

The choir is open to children in second to fifth grade from all surrounding counties and no auditions are necessary.

Children must be registered online and pay a $180 fee every semester, which covers rehearsals, music and uniforms, including a polo shirt for the premiere performance on Dec. 15 at 4 p.m.

“I look forward to getting them up and getting them singing,” Marshall-MacVean said.
