Pharmacist robbed at gunpoint
A Parsons man is being held on a $250,000 bond after police arrested him for allegedly robbing a pharmacist for drugs at gunpoint.
John Joseph Morton Jr., 28, was arrested Tuesday evening after allegedly robbing the Rite Aid in Parsons.
A press release from the Parsons Police Department said Morton allegedly held a gun in the back of the pharmacist while demanding drugs. Police did not release the pharmacist’s name. The incident occurred at approximately 4:30 p.m Tuesday, police said.
The release states the pharmacist was not harmed, and alleges Morton ran out of the store after snatching three bottles of Percocet – approximately 300 pills – from the pharmacy.
Parsons Police Chief Jonathan Jones, along with members of the Tucker County Sheriff’s Office, the West Virginia State Police and the U.S. Forestry Service, scoured the area for the alleged robber following the incident, police said
According to the release, Morton was discovered walking along Poplar Street in Parsons at about 9 p.m. and was immediately taken into custody.
Police allege that two bottles of the stolen drugs were found in Morton’s pockets and the third bottle, now empty, was later discovered nearby.
Police said Morton led them to the location where he had hidden the gun and the clothes he was wearing during the alleged incident.
The press release states that Morton gave police a statement admitting to the robbery.
Morton was being held in the Tygart Valley Regional Jail as of presstime.
