Weather to cool off after storms

The heat wave that has been punishing the region could be waning in the coming days, a representative from the National Weather Service in Charleston says.

Ken Batty, a meterologist from the NWS, said Friday a wave of showers and thunderstorms could be heading to the area as part of what he calls a “transition in weather patterns.”

“Essentially, we are going to see some thunderstorms and potential flash flooding in areas,” Batty said. “People along the Tygart Valley should keep an eye on streams, ditch lines and headwater rivers as they could be a source of potential flooding concerns. We are looking at lots of cloud cover and rounds of thunderstorms and showers.

“We can expect this transition to last into as far as Wednesday.”

Temperatures in the area should see a slight drop with lowlands going from the lower 90s to the lower to mid-80s during the day, and locations in the mountains dropping to the mid to upper 70s. The humidity will remain in the same levels as it has been, however.

Showers and thunderstorms are expected today and into tonight, and the showers and storms may be capable of heavy rainfall as well as strong wind gusts and small hail. The National Weather Service is reporting “a disturbance (that will move) up the Ohio Valley Sunday night into Monday” that “should cause another enhanced area of showers and thunderstorms” that could reach the area, according to their official website.

The National Weather Service also advised that “the wet pattern with rounds of showers and thunderstorms should continue into Wednesday, so flash flooding will remain a threat.”
