LIVE UNITED Kick-Off Auction set

Thousands of dollars worth of merchandise will be on display during the LIVE UNITED Kick-Off Auction, which will raise funds for the United Way of Randolph County’s 27 partnering agencies.

One of the most anticipated items in the auction will be the United Way quilt, a project which includes many members of the community. This year’s quilt was unveiled Tuesday at Citizens Bank of West Virginia in Elkins, where it will remain on display until the day of the auction.

Sue Pifer, owner of the Elkins Sewing Center, said the quilt took nearly a year to complete.

“In January, we put together the quilt block kits containing material for the quilt, that people come and purchase,” Pifer said. “Quilters throughout the community craft their blocks, that they return to the store in March.

“The completed blocks are put on display and those visiting the store are encouraged to vote for their favorite block. A small gift is given to the quilter of the favorite block.”

Pifer said a member of her staff, Denise Kramer, arranges the completed blocks and pieces the quilt. This year, the quilt has been named “Hope Blooms,” and will fit a full- or queen-size bed.

“Once the quilt is pieced together, Patsy Turner uses her long-arm quilter to complete the quilt,” Pifer said. “When the quilt if finished, we put it on display for everyone to see before the auction.”
