New church looking to attract younger generation
A new church is coming to Junior featuring a different style of preaching and worshipping that aims to attract a younger audience.
Pastor Jeff Burnett of Horizons Church in Harrison County said that his goal is to add new churches in other West Virginia communities. He said that contemporary Christian music will appeal to a younger generation of Christians.
“We felt like the type of service that Horizons Church has is really going to go well in Barbour County,” Burnett said. “We’re just really excited to be here and felt like the Lord is going to do a lot of great things, ministry-wise, through the church.”
Burnett said the church will attract people who aren’t involved in church, or who have given up on it in the past.
“This is fresh and new,” Burnett said. “Churches tend to keep aging, and a lot of folks aren’t coming.”
Burnett said that a preacher will not physically stand up and preach at the church. He said God’s message will be recorded in advance by a preacher, and then be delivered as video to the audience through the Internet.
Burnett said that Horizons Church is non-denominational and has the three values of worship, connecting and service. He said that a Vacation Bible school will be offered from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Thursday and Friday at the Junior Community Center.
“It’s going to be a lot of fun,” Burnett said. “It’s going to be a different kind of church.”
The Vacation Bible school music will also feature a contemporary Christian theme. Burnett said the service will be “dynamic.”
The location for the new church will be the former Heart and Hand House of Junior, which stands along U.S. Route 250. Burnett said his target goal for the first worship service will be Oct. 6. He said that 50 people are already interested in attending.
“Our goal is to really make that building sparkle again as I’m sure it did years ago,” Burnett said.
