Rescue effort underway for lost man

The Elkins Fire Department is leading a search and rescue effort for a man who was lost in the Otter Creek area.

A man in his 60s who had been hiking overnight in the Otter Creek area made a distress call that was received by the Elkins Fire Department, Elkins Fire Chief Tom Meader said at about 3:45 p.m.

The Elkins Fire Department issued a call for assistance to the Leading Creek and Beverly fire departments to help carry the man out of the woods.

Meader said the man had run out of water and called for help on his cellular phone when he got within service range.

As of 4:15 p.m., Elkins firefighters were within half an hour of the man, according to radio scanner traffic.
