State’s Largest Yard Sale starts Friday

Sidewalk shopping will be taken to the extreme this weekend, as both Buckhannon and Weston host the 15th annual West Virginia’s Largest Yard Sale.

The event kicks off Friday morning, scattered throughout the neighborhoods. Upshur County Convention and Visitors Bureau director Laura Meadows urges residents to be patient when dealing with the bargain hunters traveling the streets.

“You just have to bear with the traffic,” she said, adding that if people get a copy of the map, they will know where the busy areas will be and the ways to avoid them.

Meadows said there are 82 registered yard sales in Upshur County and another 25 in Lewis County. But she said she expects to nearly double that amount because many residents set up their own fares without registering with the local CVBs.

Maps outlining the registered sales are available online at www.visitbuckhannon.com, local hotels, restaurants and visitors centers.

All of the sales are located within a one-hour driving radius.

“People get a thrill out of finding a bargain,” Meadows said. “It’s a chance for people to get out into our neighborhoods and talk with people.”

Many businesses will be selling specialty items and antiques, Meadows said, and those locations will be shown on the map.

Officials with the CVB urge shoppers to wear comfortable walking shoes, have plenty of water, use sunscreen, sunglasses or a hat and to bring plenty of cash and change.

After a day of yard sales, shoppers and sellers alike are invited to Jawbone Park in downtown Buckhannon for Festival Fridays, an event promising music, entertainment and local produce sales. The event gets started around 5 p.m.

The yard sales will continue at the various locations on Saturday.
