Elkins meeting seeking public input on plan

The Elkins Planning Commission is taking the first step in crafting a comprehensive plan to help guide the city.

On Thursday, the commission will host a meeting seeking input from residents to help find the right direction for the plan.

“The comprehensive plan is required to have public input,” Elkins City Clerk Sutton Stokes said. “The planning commission has done training, but this is the first step in taking public input.”

The meeting, slated from 5-7 p.m. Thursday at the Old Brick Playhouse, is designed to begin the discussion of what needs to be in the plan. Stokes said there will be no speeches or presentations during the meeting.

“This is just for public input,” he said. “Other events are being planned, but are not concrete yet.”

The commission is hoping to collect information on the strengths, opportunities and threats facing the city. He said the meeting will be geared to collect that type of information.

Stokes said in the future there will be an online survey for residents to give input on the plan and its development.

“Once the draft of the plan is complete there will be two public hearings before it goes to City Council for consideration,” he said. “Council will also host a public hearing on the plan.”
