Driver in fatal Upshur crash facing felonies

Charges have been upgraded to felonies against an Upshur County man whom police say was at the wheel of a vehicle involved in a weekend accident that left one person dead.

A misdemeanor driving under the influence-with death charge has been dismissed against 33-year-old Ronnie Junior Landis of Buckhannon, according to an Upshur County Magistrate Court. He is now facing a DUI with death and reckless charge, along with a driving with a license revoked for DUI-third offense charge.

Landis is being held in the Tygart Valley Regional Jail in lieu of a $350,000 bond.

According to the complaint filed by the West Virginia State Police in Upshur County Magistrate Court, Landis was driving a Dodge pickup truck along CR 151 around 8 p.m. Saturday. The complaint stated that the truck entered the road from the right side, but crossed the center line. The complaint also stated there was a sign warning drivers to slow down for an upcoming turn, but it is alleged that the speed of Landis’ truck carried the vehicle up a hill and into a tree.

A passenger in the vehicle, 27-year-old Nicole Rogozinksi Currence, died from injuries suffered in the accident. The complaint stated that she was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the wreck.

Landis was taken to Davis Memorial Hospital for a blood sample, and the complaint stated his blood-alcohol content was 0.172, police said.
