GIVING BACK

ELKINS – Nearly 100 senior citizens turned out for ham salad sandwiches and veggie soup during the first “Free Lunch Friday” at the Randolph County Senior Center in Elkins this week.

“Free Lunch Friday,” organized by John L. Metheny of Fast and Friendly Pharmacy in Elkins, will be held from 11:45 a.m. to 12:45 p.m.the fourth Friday of every month at the senior center. It’s open to everybody over the age of 60.

Laura Ward, executive director at the center, said, “He (Metheny) came in and said he thought more people should take advantage of what the senior center has to offer.

“I think it’s a wonderful community partnership and great that we have that kind of support from community members.”

Metheny, who dined with the seniors, said, “We wanted an easy way to get people out to the senior center because they have many under-utilized services.

“My goal is to get at least two people a month into the senior center that have either never been here before or not been here in a long time, because it is good for people to get out.”

He also praised the older generation for contributing so much to the nation and said the luncheons are “a good way to thank this generation for what they have done for this country. Helping them is worth whatever we have put into it. It is a great way to give back.”

Ward said, “The seniors are tickled.”
