Philippi police apprehend man
PHILIPPI – A man who allegedly fled from police Tuesday when they attempted to arrest him for violating his bond was charged with two additional misdemeanors – obstructing and fleeing on foot, police said.
Philippi Chief of Police Jeff Walters said the incident began at about 11 a.m., when Aaron Lee Sawitski, 30, was arrested on domestic battery charges. Sawitski made bond, but violated the terms and conditions of his bond shortly thereafter by contacting the victim in the case, Walters said.
“We went to where our complainant said he was, and he basically resisted arrest and fled on foot, but we caught him,” Walters said.
The foot chase took place in north Philippi around 12:30 p.m., Walters said, but would disclose no further details out of concern for the victim’s safety.
Although there was a question about whether Sawitski was carrying a firearm at the time of the chase, police found him to be unarmed, Walters said.
Sawitski was being held on a $10,000 bond in the Tygart Valley Regional Jail as of presstime.
