Polar Express model train contest begins

ELKINS -The Polar Express holiday train has delighted thousands of children and adults alike over the past three years, but now the Elkins Depot will allow one lucky person the chance to win their very own Polar Express model train.

The model is on display at the Welcome Center in the Depot and can be won in a drawing that will be held on Dec. 15 at 8:30 p.m.

The train was built by John Kirchener of Trains R’ Us and T & K Hobby, with trim done by Eric Freeland. It was designed to resemble the Polar Express story and features aspects from the popular book and film, including skiers, ice skaters, Santa’s House, working lights and sounds and, of course, a working model of the titular train with real smoke.

The model is 94 by 45 inches, about the size of a truck bed.

Tickets are $5 each or $20 for a book of five, and are available at the Depot up until the day of the drawing.

An alternate first prize is $500 cash. Second prize is a Bachman HO Train Set and third prize is a numbered and signed Larry Fisher print of the Elkins Depot as it was in 1951.

Winners do not need to be present to win the prizes.

Proceeds of the tickets go toward the West Virginia Railroad Museum.
