Elkins man charged with sexual assault
ELKINS – An Elkins man is being held in the Tygart Valley Regional Jail on a $75,000 cash bond after being arrested for allegedly sexually assaulting a child.
Lawrence Edward Davis, 39, was arrested on one count of first degree sexual abuse and one count of sexual abuse by a guardian, both felonies. He was arraigned by Chief Randolph County Magistrate Ben Shepler Saturday.
According to the criminal complaint, West Virginia State Police officials received a complaint on Sept. 7 from a woman who advised them she had sometimes left her daughter alone with Davis between April 2011 and Aug. 4 of this year. The woman told police her daughter “told her more recently that Mr. Davis ‘touched her down below’ two times,” according to the complaint.
The woman said “she would leave her daughter alone with Davis for short periods of time, while shopping, etc.” the complaint reads.
During a sexual abuse forensic interview the alleged victim disclosed that Davis had touched her inappropriately twice, according to the complaint.
State Police officials obtained a statement from Davis, who told them, according to the criminal complaint, that “there was one instance at some time in 2013 in which he was ‘romping’ with the victim, and his hand went under her sweat pants.” The girl would have been 11 at the time, the complaint states
Davis told police that, at the time, the alleged victim told him that “if he touched her there again, she would tell her dad,” according to the complaint. Davis told police the “contact was not for sexual purposes.”
