Family adopts new furry friend at shelter event

ELKINS – An offsite adoption event for the Randolph County Animal Shelter was a success, and one family opened their home to a new pet in a unique way.

“We have so much, and decided not to exchange presents in our family this year,” Kelly Hatton said. “We decided, instead, to open our home and give our love to someone who has none – a 2-year old Dachshund mix we have named Brie.”

Hatton, who lives in Dailey, said her husband Matt and son Finn met Brie at the adoption event held outside of Big Lots in Elkins Saturday. She said they fell in love with the dog.

“I only got to see pictures of her before I met her Monday morning when we picked her up at the Randolph County Animal Shelter,” Hatton said. “Finn was so excited from the time the people at the shelter called to say we could foster her. She is scheduled to be fixed soon, and then we can adopt her.”

Hatton said this is the family’s second “pound puppy.”

“Our other pet is an 11-year-old catahoula plott named Melissa Jane,” Hatton said. “We are very excited for her to have a new friend. I know she gets lonely when we are at school and working.”

Hatton said her family is very excited for the opportunity.

“Brie will be more of a lap dog,” Hatton said. “Shelter dogs are wonderful. They need homes and love and I hope others will open their homes and hearts to a shelter dog.”

Hatton said people should go up and meet the dogs to make sure they choose one to fit their specific needs and personality.

“They give back so much and having Brie will make our Christmas complete,” Hatton said.

Randolph County Animal Shelter Manager Kelly Scheidegger said the adoption event Saturday was a huge success.

“We found forever homes for two cats and three dogs,” Scheidegger said. “There are many more animals at the shelter just waiting for a family to love.”
