Math Field Day winners announced
BUCKHANNON – Six Upshur County fourth- and fifth-graders will attend the RESA 7 Regional Math Field Day in March at Robert C. Byrd High School, which will take place in March 2014 in Harrison County.
The winners were announced at the Math Field Day event Monday on the campus of West Virginia Wesleyan College. One alternate attendee was chosen for each of the two grade levels in the event that a student is unable to attend the regional competition.
The fourth-grade winners are Shawn Defibaugh of Buckhannon Academy Elementary School in first place, Jennifer Woods of Tennerton Elementary School in second place and Max Hosfeld of Union Elementary School in third place. The fourth-grade alternate is Kierra Arbogast of BAES.
The fifth-grade winners are Jake Bohman of TES in first place, Richard Williams of BAES in second place and Vincent Dahman of Washington District Elementary School in third place. Trey Heatherly of BAES was chosen as the fifth-grade alternate.
Student Math Field Day participants and alternates are selected based on their core test skills in mathematics. Although only a few winners were announced, many other students who achieved high scores and were chosen by their respective schools also participated in the county’s Math Field Day.
“Whether you placed or not, you guys are the best of the best,” Superintendent Roy Wager told all the students. “The test was quite a bit more challenging this year. We’re proud of all the students.”
Selected as Upshur County Math Field Day participants for BAES students were fourth-graders Olivia Ellis, Ty Landis, Shawn Defibaugh, Miryah Paugh and runners-up Delaney Green and Cameron Zuliani. Fifth-grade participants were Logan Cain, Bailey Carpenter, Graci Carr, Richard Williams, Iris Tenney and runners-up Brooklynn Chidester and Frankie Ellis.
French Creek Elementary School’s fourth-grade Math Field Day participants were Shelby McDaniels, Jackson McNeish, Isabella Weatherholtz and alternate Jessica Kittle. The chosen fifth-grade participants were Kiley Landis, Cameron Simmons, Wade Weatherholtz and alternate Timmy White.
Hodgesville Elementary School participates were fourth-graders Marissa Bender, Ashauntae Jefferson, Tyson Pugh and fifth-graders Damien Claypool, Austin Metz, J.T. Perry and alternate Leah Crihfield.
Rock Cave Elementary School’s chosen participants were fourth-graders Parker Browning, Makenzi Cutright, Branson Lee, Kaitlyn Shannon and alternate Luke Hyre. BAES fifth-grade participants were Autumn Cutright, Dakota Kahlbaugh, Tasha Lahman and alternate Taylor Howard.
The fourth-grade participants that were chosen from TES are Dylan Fox, Alder Masterman, Jennifer Woods and alternate Holden Powers. Chosen fifth-graders were Cameron Snider, Sam Squires and alternate Teagan
Union Elementary School chosen Math Field Day participants were fourth-graders Max Hosfeld, Katie Pearson, Dade Riley and alternate Kayla Currence. UES fifth-grade winners are Nathan Allen, Ashton Post, Gracey Rainey and alternate Bryer Ketterman.
Washington District Elementary School participants chosen to participate include fourth-graders Meghan Bailey, Kelli Mitchell, Kyndra Spotloe, alternate Catalina Farnsworth, and fifth-graders Logan Meeks, Tyson Perkins and alternate Dalton
