One killed in three-vehicle accident
VALLEY HEAD – One person was killed and two others, including a 5-year-old girl, were injured in a three-vehicle crash Monday morning on State Route 219 in the Elkwater area of Valley Head.
Randolph County Sheriff Mark Brady said a northbound 1997 Subaru Legacy station wagon drove left of center and collided head-on with a 2012 Mercedes Sprinter Coca-Cola van. The accident reportedly occurred at about 10 a.m.
A third vehicle, a 2008 Chevy Cobalt, then slid into the van. The driver of that car was not injured, Brady said.
The driver of the Subaru was pronounced dead at the scene. The girl, who was a passenger in the Subaru, was taken to Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown. Her injuries included fractures to both legs, Brady said. The van driver suffered minor injuries and was treated at Davis Memorial Hospital, according to the sheriff.
The Subaru caught fire in the crash, Brady said, and the drivers of the van and the Cobalt, plus passersby, tried to extinguish the flames and rescue the occupants. They could not save the driver, but they were able to rescue the child.
“This truly is a tragic incident,” Brady said. “No names will be released until all of the family members have been sufficiently notified. The incident is still under investigation.”
The Huttonsville-Mill Creek Volunteer Fire Department and Randolph County EMS also responded to the scene.
